April 20 , 1960 , 5:00 pm , Lavonia First Methodist Church , Diane Roberts Haley became the wife of Charles Byron Toney .
And so it began…………….
My daddy had taken a job with Dundee Mills in Griffin, Georgia , during my college years, so my send-off to the church was from my grandfather’s house, known throughout the community as the Haley House . The Haley House stood on the corner of Brookwood and Highway 17 just a half block from the church. It has been gone for years now with a laundromat in its place.
My nanny during all my growing-up years was Sarah Lou Rucker , a dear part of our family. On this special day she helped me dress, told me how much she had always loved me, and carried my train as we WALKED up Highway 17 to the church. Such a sweet, sweet memory.
The reception was at the Haley House and after greeting our guests, Byron and I dressed to leave for our newly rented apartment in Atlanta.
As we stepped onto the porch to run to our car, Byron’s older twin brothers , Dwight and Dwain , ——KIDNAPPEd——- me !!!!! Only Daddy knew that they were planning that, so what a shock , not only to the bride and groom , but to all the guests gathered in the yard , holding rice in their hands , waiting to send us off in the traditional way.
The brothers SWOOPED me up ( no other way to say it ! ) from the front porch , carried me to Dwight’s car and away we went.
Byron reacted , jumped in Daddy’s Buick and chased us through the county. What a ride ! After more than an hour , they brought me back with Byron bringing up the rear. Not exactly the beginning I anticipated…………….
As if that weren’t enough drama for the day, we were awakened at 3:00 am ( OUR WEDDING NIGHT ! ) by Dwight , Doris ( his wife ), and their three young sons, saying they thought we might enjoy a visit from them ! Needless to say, they were not invited in ………………
I began to have some serious misgivings about this family of his.
We had reservations for the next several days at a beach-side motel in Panama City, so things were looking up , for sure.
When we arrived , we did indeed have the room as promised . BUT the University of Georgia was on spring break , and we had the ONLY room that was not occupied by the guys in SAE fraternity !
Just what every newlywed needs !!!!! Not a real moment to ourselves did we have except time spent in that one room.
Do I have regrets ? Absolutely not !
Sixty-five years with the only man I ever loved. Two children who have exceeded expectations in all ways. Six grandchildren ( some coming two-by-two ) who have made us proud and brought us joy , and now , 3 great grandchildren , who are blessings.
It is a bittersweet anniversary, this April 20th , 2026 .
I miss him……………………
Such sweet memories – with just enough crazy to add spice to a wonderful life! ❤️ Thank you for sharing them with us..
Thank you, Pam. I have been blessed.
A beautiful memory. The start of a life fulfilled by the two of you.
Thank you. I have much to be thankful for .
Great story,
Always an adventure with the Toney boys.
You got that right !!!!!!!
To have Toney blood is something special. I often think of how my precious grandmother stayed such a composed lady after having raised all those boys. I know those twins used to let the air out of my father’s tires when he came to visit my mother while they were dating. I am sure that he had his thoughts about marrying into that Toney family too. Wonderful story and wonderful memories. ❤️
Thanks for your memories and comments, Dwain and Dwight were double trouble for sure. Missing all those Toney men. Hope you and Jimmy and well and happy. We have a new ” great ” and John Luther and Kelly named him Lucas Byron. I know Byron has that pretty smile on his face…………..
Precious memories for all of us, dear friend ! We were married December 1961 I’m not sure of your year, even though I was happy being with you during your wedding. Much love and prayers for you.
You married a year and a half after I did. Remember well your wedding following church at First Baptist and then your lovely reception at your childhood home. Miss that house and Jo and Ralph. Lots of great memories.
Brought me many memories of our 63 years. I’m sure it was a tough day for you with some seeet memories. Bless you!!
Thank you ! We have both been blessed with years of ups ( and downs ) , sharing a journey with a soul mate. Not everyone has that ” stickability”. May your years continue to multiply in even more positive ways………..
You are the best storyteller I know!! I know losing Byron has been so tough. But what memories you have!
Thank you, BSS !!!! What comes up, comes out. He was always the wind beneath my wings, and with the loss, I am flying low———but not completely grounded.
Thank you for sharing the memories. I remember it well. My first real wedding!
And the first time our Daddy took a Saturday off from the Gulf Station. What a FUN day!
What a sweet, sweet addition to my blog !!!! And, oh, does it bring back all those special times with Jo, Ralph, Jerri, and you. I’ve thought about you as you’ve suffered. Jerri keeps me up on things as she can. Love hearing from you. Take care and keep the faith……..
What a memorable wedding day. Your vividly told day along with the memories of your lifelong friends warms my heart. Thank you.
Thank you………
